Situated south of Peru and west of Bolivia and Argentina, Chile is twice the size of Montana and home to over 18 million
people. We will learn about the history, the people, the politics, and the obstacles the country faces.
Paulina Mena is an associate professor of biology and has been teaching at Central since 2009. She obtained her B.S. from
Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile, and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. Her research is centered on the
conservation of native bees. Current projects involve an inventory of bees of Iowa using genetic barcoding and studying
how prairie plants can be used to increase the abundance and diversity of bees in agricultural land.
