The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and
Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war
and is often described as the war’s turning point. We will examine the critical moments of the Battle of Gettysburg –
Northern victory was far from certain.

Mark Barloon has been teaching history at Central College for eighteen years. He was born in Iowa, studied at both Iowa
State University (B.A., 1988) and the University of Iowa (M.A., 1990), and received his Ph.D. from the University of North
Texas in 2001. His area of expertise is American Military History, with special emphasis on the American Civil War.
